  4.     Argentina and Britain are still the Hatfields and the McCoys
  5. when it comes to the issue of sovereignty over the Falklands. But
  6. at least the two nations have agreed to abandon their antagonism
  7. and settle most of their remaining differences. After three days
  8. of talks in Madrid, Argentina announced last week that it was
  9. formally ending its state of hostility with Britain, seven years
  10. after London made a similar gesture.

  12.     The rapprochement includes an immediate resumption of consular
  13. ties, restoration of air and sea links between London and Buenos
  14. Aires and the lifting of all financial restrictions between the two
  15. countries. Britain also removed its prohibition on Argentine
  16. merchant and fishing ships within a 150-mile radius of the
  17. Falklands and agreed to help Argentina repair economic links with
  18. the European Community.

  20.     Nonetheless, Britain refused to reduce its 2,500-man garrison
  21. in the Falklands. And the best either side could do on the
  22. sovereignty issue was to agree not to tackle the problem just yet.
  23. But the omens are good for their next meeting, at which they expect
  24. to renew diplomatic ties: they will reconvene on Valentine's Day.
